THE 2006 MARATHON DES SABLES

'I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again.'

  Bart Simpson, The Simpsons

In 2006 I took part in and completed the Marathon des Sables, a 250km footrace across the Sahara that boldly advertises itself as 'the toughest race on Earth.' And if my week in the desert is anything to go by, they might just be right.

At many times during the MdS I was physically and emotionally crushed, and promised myself I would never do anything quite so stupid ever again. And yet here I am two years later about to do just that!

It is almost impossible to put my MdS experience into words, although that has rarely stopped me from trying. But to spare you from my tedious anecdotes about the heat, the sandstorms and the blisters, I hope these photos will give you a glimpse into my week in the Sahara - a beautiful but unforgiving place that provided me with the most difficult, exhilarating and rewarding challenge of my life.
